As far as Childrens DVDs go, this is a great family film where nineteen year old Alice returns into the wonderland after persuading herself that her first visit at age 6, was merely a fantasy. There were mixed critiques on this motion picture, some say it is bad and nothing like the first (bear in mind it wasn’t meant to be) and some say it’s a brilliant addition to the popular Lewis Carroll books.

We believe this film is a superb mixture of the two popular publications, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice through the Looking Glass”. We enjoyed most of the film, although for grown ups, it could be a little bit of a let-down in comparison to the original publications. That being said, so far as Childrens DVDs go, Alice in Wonderland 2010 is certainly one to see and we think of it to be among the best Tim Burton motion pictures ever made.

A word of warning though; this movie is a lot darker than others that you might have experienced – including the Walt Disney version. It’s most likely not a great movie for youngsters. A few of the fight scenes are possibly not suitable for all ages – but the PG certificate suggests this.

Kids over the age of 7 or 8 should have no difficulties watching this motion picture with their moms and dads though. It is not scary – it is just a bit on the dark side. Mr Johnny Depp is fantastic with this role and we have to admit, we did think (on first impressions) he could be playing exactly the same character as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but in fact he plays a much deeper character who occasionally is very humorous. As adults, we did have a good laugh out loud many times during the movie which is unusual for Childrens DVDs nowadays.  Read more...

With summer in full swing, many children in the US are now getting their first experience with summer camps. While some children may be concerned about missing home and hanging out with new friends, summer camp provides indelible positive memories for all Americans.

Reflecting on memories of our own, we elected to ask 30 kids from area schools in the New York and New Jersey region what their favorite summer camp activities are. We then contrasted these results to a very unscientific poll done in our office of a dozen staff, and were amazed to find out that the results were nearly identical! This was a huge surprise for us. Although we did not have interactive media and cell phones when we went to summer camp, the same activities are still as beloved today as they were 25 years ago.

#1: Archery. Yes, the idea of an under-13 child firing a salvo of arrows out in the wilderness where other children may conjure up memories of Lord of the Flies. However, with the safety measures and training that counselors get in child management, archery is an absolutely safe summer camp activity. And kids love it. It makes them feel like nobility back in medieval England. Or Ted Nugent.

#2: Canoeing. This one sort of goes directly against kid logic. It’s absolute exertion for your body, plus the children have to be team players–two things that are anathema to any young boy or girl. However, perhaps it’s peer pressure that draws kids into feeling that this is a fun activity.
