There is no airport on the the island of Formentera so most people arrive at Port de la Savina. The port grew from a natural harbor that was used to export Sabina pine, thus its name. These days it is not so much a commercial port as a tourist hub with a beautiful marina.

The ferries that call at La Savina are from mainland Spain and other Balearic islands. Ferries come many ports, including: Altea, Alicante, Denia, Sant Antoni, Santa Eularia, Palma, and Barcelona. There are also boats that go from La Savina to the neighboring island of Espalmador.

When you are in La Savina you will find that there is a decent collection of restaurants, cafes and tapas bars. With a nice modern marina to look out on it’s worth chilling here for a bit. It is also a very practical village as you are able to hire and buy everything you might need for your stay on the island, from motorbikes to toilet paper. The custom of name days in Russia dates back to the 17th century and originated with the Orthodox calendar of saints. Usually the date of a particular saint’s death was commemorated as that saint’s feast day, and people sharing the same name would celebrate themselves and the saint on that special date. Churches began promoting these saints’ feasts days, which came to be known as name days, and they quickly became more popular than celebrating birthdays.

Name day celebrations can be often found in Russian literature, as in Anton Chekov’s play Three Sisters. The whole first act surrounds Irena, the youngest sister, who is enchanted by a spinning top she receives on her name day. Alexander Pushkin’s novel Eugene Onegin also references this tradition by describing a festive party for Tatiana, the main female character, whose popular name day is January 25th.
