These days everyone has a cellphone. It is such a common accessory now, they have become almost as ubiquitous as wristwatches. And just like the little old wristwatch, they can be used to project your personality and make whatever statement you want to make. Your cellphone can be fun and colorful, business like and serious, or upscale and trendy. And the way you give your cellphone that character is much more than choosing a particular model.

First up, my favorite cellphone customization – ringtones. This is the easiest way to change the personality of your cellphone. It lets you recognize your phone, unlike when you and 5 people around you are still using the default ringtone built into your cellphone. With your own customized ringtones you won’t have to search for your phone again just to realize that it isn’t even you phone ringing. Custom ringtones are also great for letting you distinguish between your most frequent callers. You can assign a specific ringtone to different incoming numbers, so you know who is calling before you even check the number.

Idea number two is more about the personality that you project just to the people that call you, rather than coming right from your cellphone for you and people around you to hear. What I mean is the ringtone’s little brother, the ringback tone. This lets you set up music or sound clips to play for people calling you, as they wait for you to pickup. Instead of just hearing the standard ring beeps, they could be introduced to the latest club tune that you just have to share, or maybe you’d like to play some actual live elevator music just to amuse your friends.

Anyone that owns a cellphone has probably been bombarded with all of the possible add-on features that are available, such as super duper voice mail packages, call-id, block call-id, downloadable games, custom ringtones, etc. What I have just discovered lately is another fun customization for your cell phone, custom music clips that play for your caller when they are waiting for you to answer. I have some fun ideas for anyone that has been considering ringback tones for their cell phone, but is still undecided.

My favorite thing about ringback tones is probably not something that many people think of, but the majority of the ringback clips that I put on my cellphone are not music, but instead they are just plain audio clips. Well, not just any old clips – the ringback tones that I look for mostly fun clips that will make any body that calls me smile or even laugh out loud.

The audio clips that I look for are old style comedy clips. Even though these haven’t been in circulation for many many years, and have long ago exited the tv comedy show rotation, I think they are fun to find and put on my phone as my ringback tones. Since a lot of people that call me will be hearing these for the first time, it’s actually seems like I have the coolest ringback tone around.

More typically, music clips will be the sound of choice for the majority of customers using ringback tones. If you spend any time searching the web for cool stuff for your cell phone, you’ve no doubt seen the endless ads for current R&B and pop hits downloadable as ringtones. Although not as prevalent, ringback tone selections pretty much echo the commercially available ringtone collections. The great thing is that the cell phone carriers stay up to date with current music releases, since obviously these are hugely popular.
