Bartending is a fun and exciting profession, but it takes skill with both drinks and people. The following tips are fairly common sense guidelines that anyone interested in the profession should know and follow.

1. Never discuss religion or politics. All it will do is lead to a fight or make people uncomfortable

2. Keep the bar clean. Wipe it down after you serve every drink, and keep the entire environment neat and tidy.

3. Know the trendy drinks. While you don’t have to have the entire drink recipe guide memorized, it helps to be familiar with the more trendy beverages of the day.

4. Learn about sports. People in bars will often be watching or talking about local sports events. If you understand what they are talking about, you can participate as well.

5. Greet everyone as they come in. Try and be attentive to new customers, and to say hello as soon as they enter the establishment.

6. Serve drinks by the base, not by the stem. Nobody wants to put their lips to a place where your hand just was. As you serve drinks, make sure you hold the glass by the bottom, away from where drinking will actually occur.

7. Personal hygiene is important. Make sure that you look neat and sharp, and that you don’t smell bad. You are part of the ambiance of the bar and so your appearance and personal attributes matter.

8. Pay extra attention to regulars and big tippers. While you should strive to treat everyone equally, someone who is a constant in the tavern, or who is willing to pay extra for extra service, should receive extra special attention from you.

When a person sees a bartender performing tricks and putting on a show, it has the potential to cause some excitement. This can be quite entertaining for a person when they are in the bar for a few quick drinks, especially when this is unexpected. Flair bartending is not a new art, it is just one that has evolved in the past few years and has developed a new following. It has found an audience with a generation of bar patrons that are being entertained with a new style of tricks that previously were unthought-of.

There is an excellent opportunity to get treated to a show when watching a person with their flipping bottles and other bar accessories. A bartender that has been trained in this art, many times can put on a show while also serving a person their drink.

Flair bartenders are mainly found in the larger cities. You can usually find them behind the bar at large casinos as well as national restaurant chains. There are several famous restaurants that let their bartenders show off their flair talents on a nightly basis. One in particular bar chain, which started in New York City in the 1960’s and shares it name with a day of the week, is responsible for the invention of flair bartending.

Before you think that there is more to this than just flinging some bottles around, remember that it takes years to get your skills to the point that you are considered to be an effective and competent flair artist. You will need to make it a point that you practice often. You will want to practice in an open space with dummy bottles before trying anything made of glass or filled with actual liquor.
