Jitters and tingles race up and down my spine; nervous energy pervades my body. It’s opening night of the comedy Lend Me a Tenor. Tonight I am Maggie. The audience’s buzzing chatter reaches my ears. Lights dim, one last deep breath to calm my fears. Will the audience like it? Will they laugh? Disguised by darkness, Maggie walks onstage. A spotlight focuses, temporarily blinding her, but she does not notice. Secretly waiting in anticipation of the audience’s reaction, Maggie raises her arms, dreamily conducting an Italian Opera. The audience chuckles and Max enters stage left.
The time flies by, before I know it, it’s intermission. Drinking cold water, I regain control of my nerves and bliss. The director runs in, she too is smiling.
“The audience is ecstatic! They can’t stop telling me how funny it is! I even had some people say they cried!” Beaming, the director rushes to share the good news.
“Places in three,” calls the stage manager.
I return to being Maggie and wait for my cue. The characters walk onstage. Max begins his lines and the audience laughs.
“Oh Max!”
Gushing, Maggie kisses Max, throwing her arms around him, her right foot daintily popping up. A split-second of silence. A flash of fear enters her mind. Then, a booming tenor begins singing a magnificent crescendo; laughter is replaced by cheers and applause. The blinding stage lights fade out while the house lights turn on.
No longer the character Maggie, I walk onstage for the final curtain call. Curtsying, I steal a quick glimpse at the standing audience. They are smiling. A rush of joy and adrenaline sweeps over me, success and relief emerge. My own smile increases tenfold, and I forget the fear. Read more...
The very first official Indian designer for Barbie clothes launched her own label ‘Nisshk’ at ‘Fuel’ yesterday as mommy Neeta Lulla with family, watched her outshine one and all. This line of her is a complete girly collection reflecting her own style and sensibility. The range has a vintage feel to it; one could easily say that designs are dedicated to teenagers. However, each ensemble is so young and vibrant that anyone can wear it. The Black story had a full range of dresses with beautiful round necklines and stone works that made it look classy. Whites once again had their own purity with minimalism. Pinks and greys were also found aplenty.
Net, georgette, chiffon, beautifully combined with crochet work and knits looked sensual. Pearls and other beaded accessories enhanced the vintage feel. Just teaming up those with veiled headgears would be reminiscent to that 80’s look. Juhi Chawla couldn’t stop praising Nishka, in her words “I am amazed to see her designs. I wish I had teenage daughters and then I would have chosen most of it (the collection) for them. Initially, I was expecting her designs to be influenced by Neeta’s designs however, I am actually surprised. It’s totally different, completely ‘Nishka’.” Though Esha Deol loves to dress up in black, Nishka managed to mesmerize her with baby pinks and whites. “Personally, I like to be simple and mostly prefer black, however, I must confess that Nishka has done a fabulous job at this young age and managed to convince me likewise. Having ‘Neeta’ with her is an advantage and I am sure, she will carve a niche for herself pretty soon”, said Esha at the launch. Read more...

Having ‘Neeta’ with her is an advantage and I am sure, she will carve a niche for herself pretty soon”, said Esha at the launch. Well we all are eager to know how Neeta felt about it, so here goes- “Nishka is a very hard working girl. Unlike me, she is truly focused on whatever she is doing at a time. In fact her design sensibility reflects her persona and taste. I have always been a tough boss to her when it comes to professional training, hope she does really well in this million dollar industry”. ‘Fuel’ is one of the premiers in the business houses and also believes in giving a chance to young talents. Falguni Jhaveri from ‘Fuel’ says “I have always known Neeta’s designs but quite surprised to see Nishka do such creative work in her own style. It’s a privilege to retail her designs from our store”. The fashion industry appeared like ho to congratulate Nishka. Mr. Anil Chopra (Lakme), Lubna Adams (choreographer), Vikram Raizada (IMG), designers Vikram Phadnis and Anita Dongre visited to take a sneak peak of the young designers collection. We also spotted Leena Mogre, Royel Padamsee, Kishan Mulchandani and Parvez Damania. Neeta’s association with Bollywood attracted most of the stars at the brunch. Sameera Reddy, Aftab Shivdasani, Celina Jaitley, Esha Deol, Juhi Chawla, Pooja Batra, Shreya Sharanand Neetu Chandra were few of them. Models, Kavita Kharayat, Netra Raghuna than and Deepti Gujral also made a quick appearance. Stylekandy.com was the first to report designer Pria Kataria Puri will be showcasing her collection in a fund raiser event at the annual Miss India, USA pageant. Now, in another first of sorts, we bring to you the coverage of the event with first hand information and pictures, before it’s even aired on national television. The event opened with Pria’s spectacular fashion show, showcasing an ‘INDO WESTERN’ collection. Top models walked the ramp, all of them ex- Miss Indi as, USAs and Globes. There was a silent auction of few of pieces from the collection. Pria said, “I am very excited and honoured to represent India once again in an international platform for a great cause!” PKP had been invited to showcase at the same platform last year too. Lisa Ray, Judge of Mr and Ms Globe looked ravishing in Pria Kataria Puri’s dresses- “she loved Pria’s outfits so much, she decided to wear a golden sexy number for the red carpet and an off-white tulle elegant indo western outfit for the later part of the evening. Kiely Williams, who also walked the ramp and the Chetah Girls, looked stunning in Pria’s silk jersey gowns and antique uncut bangles. Top celebrities from Hollywood and Bollywood came together to go down the red carpet, greet fans, pose for pictures, and experience an amazing night.Back in the rebellious sixties the back-to-nature movement rejected manmade fibers, the manufacture of which took its toll on the environment, in favor of cotton, linen, and wool. Indian print dresses, bulky sweaters, and vintage clothing made before the introduction of synthetics offered a quirky counterculture look with lots of room for variety. The natural fabrics movement has grown up, with clothing designers and manufacturers offering an increasingly broad variety of fashions for an environmentally conscious and often affluent clientele. Easy-care cotton in an amazing number of finishes ranges from simple woven fabric to soft jersey knits, and can even be fashioned into luxurious sateen for evening wear. Cotton is arguably the most versatile fiber there is.Unfortunately cotton, although a natural fiber, can have a severely negative impact on the environment. Cotton is a demanding crop; it leeches nitrogen out of the soil, rapidly depleting the land in which it is grown. Farmers and environmentalists around the globe have responded to that by deciding to promote organic farming methods, rotating crops to replenish the soil and abstaining from the use of pesticides. The buying public has responded; many consumers have opted to spend more for garments and accessories fashioned from organically grown cotton. Some new manmade fibers, although not natural, have found acceptance with environmentally conscious consumers because they are made using recycled materials. EcoSpunTM fabric, made entirely of discarded plastic soda bottles, has found its way into products ranging from practical tote bags to roomy, warm winter parkas. <!– From http://www.buzzle.com/articles/natural-organic-fashions-chic.html –> <!– google_ad_section_end –> It was fashion week in New York and all the top designers were at the premier fashion show event at the Amex building. There were limos and photographers lining the outside of the building like flickering shiny beetles. The sun was setting leaving a lovely glow about the city. Marc Rapete was this season’s hottest designer. He stepped out of his double wide Hummer dressed in his usual attire: a sailor inspired tuxedo with patent leather squeaky white shoes. The tuxedo was also white with blue anchor buttons on the jacket and underneath, a white shirt and navy bow tie. With snug white trousers, he was a sassy looking sailor. The glow of the setting sun, hit the buildings and then onto Marc Rapete’s face. It was a chiseled masculine face with light lines and no moles. Marc Rapete would have squinted under the glare, but his massive anchor sunglasses prevented him from the need. The flickering shiny beetle bug camera people went bezeerk, as if Marc Rapete was a neon night light glow they just had to follow. This show tonight was mainly for Prada bags and it’s new Prada line of Prada handbags . The woman representing Prada tonight was Evette Von Flute, a mysterious lemon of a woman. For a spokesperson for an Italian fashion handbag, she was an enormous figure, representing the shape of her bags and less like the models who wore them.Evette Von Flute was sitting in the front row on the left side of the catwalk. Her thick black hair in large ringlets cascaded down her back, the top part of her curls was held together by a yellow buckle clasp. Over her fruity figure she wore a loud red strapless floor-length dress. The front of it had a large sparkly tadpole on the entire side of the dress. Its tadpole body snaked down the side and onto the back of the dress. She wore sparkly green gloves to match her tadpole and on her arm, she held the largest canary yellow bag, covered in metal studs.Metal was in this year. It was going to be all over everything- from shoes to purses to dog collars. The fashion show lights dimmed and a quiet murmur came over everyone. No one but Evette Von Flute moved. She got up and walked over to the catwalk, now bathing in a soft spotlight. The dress shone in the light, the tadpole stretched across her dress didn’t look silly as much as it looked artistic, beautiful, different and mysterious. The crowd was quiet, all except the flickering beetles who were not quiet, flashing and clicking away, like other beetles, gave no concern about anything else but themselves. She received a microphone from a suited figure and began to speak. With a soft but fluid voice, she thanked everyone for coming to the new Prada handbag lineup. Then, throwing her arms up into the air, she said “On with the show!”Then the show started. Colored lights moved about the catwalk, tall, skinny waif looking models came out one by one each holding a Prada handbag either on their shoulder, as a clutch or as a tote. All of them were colorful bags with big metal chains, clunky buckles and shiny zippers or buttons. Not one of those Prada bags up there cost less than a car payment, and possibly rent. The models could have worn anything and they all would have looked lovely. Each one wore solid black though, because it was the bag that was for show- not the models. The after party was crazy. It was at Marc Rapete’s million dollar home just outside the city. He had jugglers and musicians strolling about the house, caterers and bartenders in all corners of the place. And once everyone was there- he toasted Evette Von Flute- to the Prada Handbag Queen! Evette Von Flute made almost $200,000 from that show. She donated several Prada bagsto charity and she even donated part of the proceeds to fashion education.Neckties are an essential component of the modern man’s formal attire. So much so that it is unthinkable to be without them on an interview or other formal occasions. This clothing accessory has even become fashionable with designer ties, printed ties, and ties customized for institutions. The history of neckties goes back a century ago, perhaps to France where it was used my a portion of the military and liked by the king. The custom seems to have begun with the Croatian portion of the French army wearing a ‘cravate’ while coming back after defeating the Turks. The ‘cravate’ itself could have been a gift to a soldier from his wife that caught on with others. The French world for a necktie is still related to this word and they call it by the same name. The custom of wearing a cravate seems to have spread to England through the English king who was in exile. Various institutions like adopted it as an identifying feature of their members. The 19th century saw the evolution of the cravate or scarf into the shape we are familiar with today.Various institutions like clubs, military regiments, schools and universities used patterned ties to indicate membership in 19th century England. The custom then spread from England to the rest of the world, particularly New England. Today people from all walks of life in most countries wear neckties in the English fashion with suits and formal shirts. The very word ‘formal’ seems to have become synonymous with wearing a tie.Like so many other discoveries and inventions, we owe the origin of the necktie to the army life. It is interesting to consider this fact – how various inventions and discoveries ( Internet too )

The youngest person to ever lease a hydrogen vehicle from Honda is an actress. She is 17 years old and she is Q’orianka Kilcher, one of the stars of the 2005 movie “The New World”. This is as per an announcement sent out by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
John Mendel, the senior vice president of the company, expresses, “The best way to demonstrate the importance of next generation vehicles like the Honda FCX is to put the next generation of drivers behind the wheel. Q’orianka Kilcher will be driving around Hollywood in the ultimate environmental status symbol, literally and figuratively driving the change toward a hydrogen future.”
Of course, it is not quite surprising that even young people like Kilcher has chosen to use hydrogen vehicles that are friendlier to the ailing environment. Of course, the Honda FCX is going to help out the environment much because it has been created to have zero emissions. And people like Kilcher using vehicles like this one, they are helping out the environment in their own little way.
Kilcher does explain, “As a young person today, I feel it is important to take initiative toward seeking positive solutions and stepping up the quest toward clean energy and environmental preservation. When I first started pursuing my dream of a zero emissions vehicle as my first car, it seemed like a pretty unrealistic dream. With Honda’s innovation and support, my dream of helping the environment became a reality!”
