Having a high-end audio system in your home theater can really enhance your in-home entertainment experience. While it’s extremely important to have quality components of you audio system, the speakers are responsible for delivering the sound to your ears. For this reason, it’s extremely important to select quality speakers that best fit your needs! This guide will discuss different options if you’re looking for new speakers for your home theater.

First let’s discuss the different surround sound systems available. The most common system is the 5.1 surround sound system. The 5.1 system comes with 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer. This system will have two speakers located in the front, two in the back, one in the center and the subwoofer. Then there’s the 7.1 system which has those same speakers, but has two speakers on the sides as well. If you’re really into bass, then consider a 5.2 or 7.2 which come with two subwoofers, instead of one.

The first and most common type of speaker in a surround sound system is the floor standing speakers. These have been made for many years and they’re quite large. The size of the speakers allows them to produce different frequencies, including bass which isn’t usually produced from smaller speakers. Although they do take up more space than smaller speakers, they tend to be more expensive since they’ll deliver the best overall sounds.

Bookshelf speakers are the way to go if you’re looking for small speakers, instead of floor standing speakers. If you’re working in a small area or if you don’t want to spend as much money, this is your best option. They make some great bookshelf speakers, but since they’re smaller, they won’t deliver the sounds of the larger speakers. The advantage is the convenience in placing them.

If you don’t like the large speakers in the room, there’s always the custom option of ceiling speakers or in-wall speakers. These speakers work the same way as other speakers, but they’re placed into the ceiling or wall after mounted in a frame. These speakers are usually full-range, but adding a subwoofer is always a good idea to compliment this system. I’ve even seen in-wall or ceiling subwoofers. Most in-wall or ceiling speakers come with grills that can be painted to match your walls and blend in. In order to install these speakers, the tough part is running the wires which are usually done behind the walls or ceilings.

Another option to consider when it comes to speakers is extending your sound system outdoors with outdoor speakers. Outdoor speakers are weather-resistant and are usually installed under a covered deck. They should have a enough power, since they’re outdoors and the sound has room to travel in an open space. I’ve even seen outdoor speakers designed as rocks that mesh with a pool, so you can pump your tunes while in the pool and the sounds are delivered at ear level.

Now that we’ve covered speakers, the last important piece is the speaker wire. People often ignore speaker wire, but it’s a huge part of a high-end sound system. Old wires and low grade speaker wire will only hurt the sound. You’ll notice the difference right away with new speaker wire.

There are many options out there when you’re looking for speakers, but you must decide what type of speaker system to go with first. Be sure to shop around and always go in and hear the speakers in a store before making a purchase. Hopefully this guide has helped and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your new sound system!
